Are you taking advantage of your own city? Are there places to go and things to see that you’re missing out on?
I’ve always thought I was a city girl…I think I’m just a places girl. I like to go out and see things…but I must admit that I’m more excited about buildings and stores and restaurants and cool walls and the like than landscapes and wide open spaces (and Utah has TONS of that, so if that’s what you love…come visit Utah). Growing up in Seattle, I always wanted to end up in New York…I thought I needed the big city life. Going to college in Oregon helped me appreciate the smaller towns and living in the Bay Area and working in San Francisco gave me a taste of the crazy big city life. Living in Utah, surprisingly, has given me a good amount of everything that I need. There are amazing things in this city and I’m on a mission to get out and find more of those places.
One of my favorite places is City Creek Center. I love it for the pretty architecture and the variety of stores and the feeling of being outside when you don’t really need to be (especially if the weather is bad – either too cold or too hot!)
As you branch out from the City Creek area in the heart of downtown, the little pockets of amazing homes and older buildings and shops that are being renovated and revived are some of my favorite things. These older neighborhoods remind me of home with all of the big old trees and the creaky floors. I love seeing the old mixed in with the new and the variety of people that live in and frequent these spots.
I’m looking forward to showcasing more about what I love in each of these places in the weeks to come. My daughter and I are out looking for cool walls to photograph and fun local spots to explore. Make sure you’re taking advantage of the good stuff in your own backyard.
