After doing a lot of research as seen in my last post about indoor plant inspiration we decided to actually plant some of those plants that I purchased way back when on a trip to the J&J Nursery. At the nursery I had collected 3 small succulents of varying heights and colors and one larger jade plant for my kitchen pot where my last plant had died.
The next step was choosing my container. I knew that the larger jade plant was for my kitchen pot, but I wanted something low and flat and glass for the three baby succulents. I found this BLOMSTER glass bowl for under $10 at IKEA and thought that it would be perfect. I picked up a bag of small river rocks at Home Depot and then we just needed to find the time in our schedule to get to planting.
supplies needed:
succulent plants
container
small river rocks or pebbles
soil
small shovel
For this project I pretty much let the kids do it all and just took photographs of their project….and I also really don’t love dirt all that much so for me it was a lot more fun to watch. I had them pour a small layer of the river rocks into the bottom of each of the containers to help with drainage and then fill most of the rest of the containers with soil. Getting the plants in was a 2-3 person job for them, but once they got the plants in then they helped each other fill in the gaps with extra soil.
In our kitchen we tend to drop a lot of ice so we have learned over the years to just add the ice cubes to our plants for a little slow watering. Helps us to not over fill the container and end up with soupy muddy water spilling over the edges. I will bring the trio of succulents into the kitchen to water and the jade plant sits on the island in the kitchen, so he’s hard to forget about. I have to remember to turn the grouping of succulents often as the tall plants will turn towards the window light.
