thursday three things | utah photographer | where should we have our shoot?

    Thursday, March 11th, 2010

In thinking about topics for a Thursday Three Things post I run through questions and items that clients and I discuss in our planning for sessions. One topic that often comes up is where should we have our session…what kind of session do you, the client, desire? This Thursday Three Things will address that issue and do in to some detail on the types of sessions that are offered through carrieowensphotography.

    thing one:

Sometimes the easiest place to hold our session is at the client’s home. The good thing about having the session at your home is that your children are comfortable there. They like to show off their rooms, explore the different rooms and outdoors with me. They like to show me their toys and they can most often be themselves at home. We can read books, play games and have a relaxed time with the lady that showed up at the house with a camera. Newborns are almost always done at the clients home as well…easiest for the new parents – even if it’s your fifth baby! I come to you, bring my things and we just spend some time getting the shots that we need.

    thing two:

We live in a great state…Utah has many great locations for outdoor shoots in all seasons with very different outcomes. There are lots of parks and trails and other outdoor spots up the canyons that have great backdrops for some fabulous sessions. We can also take your shoot to a more urban location with some fun bright walls downtown and other fun sights. There are also some other great spots that I have in my bag of tricks, so if you’re stumped on a spot, let’s do some brainstorming! I also love trying out new locations – just ask my kids! -  so if you have something in mind that you’d like to try, please know that I’m open to suggestions!

    thing three:

Studio sessions…what??? Since when? Since now. Studio sessions are something new that carrieowensphotography will be offering this Spring so keep checking the blog for more information and sneak peeks to come!

thursday three things | utah wedding photographer | wedding love

    Thursday, February 11th, 2010

With the wedding I shot last weekend and as we get closer to Valentine’s Day I get the feeling that love is in the air. I don’t take on many weddings each year, but there is something undeniable about how much I love them…Weddings are a magical time, a time where the bride and groom are the stars of the day. A time where all your planning and dreams of your wedding day are finally becoming reality. A time that you will remember for the rest of your lives. I love the details of a wedding, all the little thoughts that have come together to set the stage for the moment you and your loved one become tied to each other for the rest of your lives.

Shooting a wedding for me is about more than just the one day. I love to meet couples for their engagement shoots, later for bridals with the bride alone and then for the big day itself. Sometimes a bride and I can’t find a time before the wedding for the bridals so we can always do them after the big day, either alone or with the groom if he feels up to it. If you’re newly engaged…or about to be ;) or have been engaged for a while, I would love to talk more with you about the wedding packages available from carrieowensphotography.

and now for the thursday three things for this Thursday before Valentine’s Day:

    thing one

engagements…these photos of the happy couple were taken at Wheeler Farm, one of my very favorite spots:

    thing two

ceremonies…not something that I get to do very often here in Utah, but I absolutely love them. This one took place at the beautiful Le Jardin in Sandy, Utah.

    thing three

bridals are great fun and can be taken at many locations. For this session both bride and groom came dressed and ready for some fun shots at Temple Square.

thursday three things | utah photographer | image boxes

Carrie Owens Photography is offering some new options for clients: Fine Art Albums, Fine Art Image Boxes and Session Boxes available for purchase after your session. These products are available for those of us that just can’t seem to let an image go from our sessions or that simply want a gorgeous way to display our photographs. These items are perfect compliments to a wedding package or a senior session as well as your typical family session.

    1. Fine Art Albums are beautiful square albums that are custom designed from your session and showcase your images in a way that you can cherish for generations. More information on these albums to follow soon. Current clients, please inquire if you are interested in this product.

    2. Fine Art Image Boxes are boxes that contain the images from your session in mounted 5×7 format perfect for a rotating easel display on your bookcase or mantle. These images have a beautiful texture to them and fit nicely in the custom designed box with room for a cd of your images in a low resolution format as a digital backup.

    3. Session Boxes are smaller than the Fine Art Image Boxes yet still contain all of your images in loose 5×7 format. This option also has the cd of your images in low resolution format as a digital backup. The box is custom designed with a beautiful ribbon and magnetic  closure.

    Thursday, January 28th, 2010

This week’s Thursday Three Things contains three quick photos…photos that over the past year have become my favorites. I’m slowly working on updating my website to include some additional photos from over the past year, I love looking back and revisiting old sessions, seems that I always see something new.

    1. From a wonderful newborn session…a photo that I have wanted to capture of a new babe for some time.

    2. From one of my weddings in 2009, a great couple who were fantastic to work for. We were able to capture so much emotion and joy between the two of them in their images.

    3. From a fun family session, I loved getting these images home and looking through them and this was one that stood out to me from the second I saw it.

With the new year comes new things and new happenings at carrieowensphotography, and with that, a new feature on the carrieowensphotography|blog is the Thursday Three Things. Each week I will feature Three Things. They will be things that make my life easier, little photography tips, things I’m working on in my life or other little tidbits of info from me to you…aren’t you so excited? :)

This week’s Thursday Three Things relate to the business side of things…new offerings for twenty ten from carrieowensphotography.

    thing one:

Thank you to all my clients and all the new people and friends that I’ve met in the past year. Thank you all for making it a great year, I appreciate you all very much! and to thank you for your support and business I am offering $25 off session fees for any of my previous clients…even those of you that I haven’t seen in a while :)

    thing two:

Since opening my business I have contemplated the benefits to a baby plan or a toddler plan or one of the other various options that are out there and none of them quite fit the way that I wanted to do business. I have come up with a plan that I really like. It’s called the carrieowensphotography|year in pictures and it means just that. There are two options in this program, Option One gives you 4 sessions in a 12 month period for a discount off of your combined session fees and Option Two gives you 3 sessions in a 12 month period. Option One is a wonderful program for a baby’s first year (newborn, 3 month, 9 month and 1 year) and Option Two is great for those baby years beyond and for family portraits as well. Look for a more detailed write up on the blog coming very soon or if you need info sooner, please email me.

    thing three:

As a thank you to my clients I want to offer up a new referral program. For every new client that you refer to me who books a session with carrieowensphotography I will award you a $50 print credit to be used on your next order. The credit will appear in your account in the clients section of my website once your referral has had their session. If you haven’t already created an account, please do so by clicking on the clients link on my website.

Check back next week for a different Thursday Three Things!

what to wear version two | Utah family photographer

    Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

This post is in follow up to a popular entry from November answering the always present “What do I wear?” question. This shows that it’s ok that you don’t have outfits that “match” or that you think go together. Because if you pull together outfits that are similar in style, meaning all casual, all dressy, all in jewel tones, etc…you can pull of some great looks.

This example shows a more colorful example of coordinating outfits than the previous version which showed a more monochromatic styling. Both are great, but this example shows that you don’t have to be matching to look great together. A outfit grouping like the one above highlights the people and their personalities and creates a great pulled together look for your images.

Were the months before the holidays too crazy and hectic to get everyone together for some family photos? Did you get tons of holiday cards from friends and relatives showcasing their family pics but never took the time to create your own? Are you thinking it’s time to bite the bullet and finally get everyone together for some fun shots…but you’re thinking you need to wait until next year? Please don’t wait. So many things can happen in a year…and we all know how crazy those months are before the holidays, right? :) So I have an offer for you…book yourself a family photo session now at the regular session fee rate (or one for just the kids for a great Valentine’s gift for mom or dad) and get another fall family session to be held after August 1st for a half off your fall session fee. Keep reading the blog in the coming weeks…some new information to be coming regarding new products and more!

Enjoy this little peek from our day.

what do I wear? | Utah family photographer

    Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

So many times I will have clients email me and ask what they should wear to their session. This is such a tough question because the answer really depends on who you are as a family. My feeling on photography is that the photos should represent you as you are on a daily basis. Should you come in sweats and pjs? Probably not. But the main idea is to have you and your family (especially little ones) wearing something that they are comfortable in so that their focus is on having fun and not tugging at their clothes. The photo shown here depicts a family grouping that has similar colors throughout that pick up on eachother to accent everyone in a complimentary way.  There are so many ways to dress for your session, and remember – the most important thing is to be comfortable and to have fun!

    COP newfashion 1

Typically when I plan out my own kids outfits (for photos…not everyday! :) ) I choose one shirt or dress and pull the other pieces from there. There are also times where I will dress my boys in the same or similar shirts that coordinate with my daughter’s outfit, partially because I like it, and partially because it annoys my brother in law. A win-win :) .

Just Monday I took my three young ones to a new spot to try out some photos. We rushed home from school and I pulled a shirt out for Miss C. The shirt was mainly brown with some orange and other colors in it (although a bit more purple than I would have liked). I then pulled a mostly orange shirt for Mr J and a different little shirt for Mr M that had orange and brown running through it as well as some lighter colors. So although all shirts were not the same, they all had the same basic colors in them (and if I would have planned a little more ahead, I probably could have done a better job coordinating, but on the spur of the moment, it worked fine!) For instance, Miss C’s shirt had words on it, which is something I would not recommend as it can be distracting. I also would have preferred for her to have a different color of jeans so that they didn’t stand out as being different from the boys, but that entailed doing laundry, and we just didn’t get that far yesterday :)

Please excuse the not so technically perfect photo above…it seems as though my children are getting a little tired of being in front of the camera. Imagine that :) I guess I’m paying for acting the same way for my mother’s camera when I was young!

    snow | Utah photographer

    Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

It’s snowing here in Utah, and I am such a happy camper! It’s not doing a whole lot of damage, and that is for the best. But I do adore the snow! There is something so peaceful and beautiful and calming looking out the window to see the snow coming down.

So happy to finally have a new blog home. Editing is easier, importing photos is easier…both things that make my life easier! :) Please update bookmarks as the old blog will no longer be updated. You will find all old carrieowensphotography|blog content has moved here as well, however old personal Carrie Owens blog info has not (although that wasn’t getting updated very often anyway). Thank you for your support and with the new and easy blog, I hope to be updating on a more regular basis!
