sweet family of three | salt lake city utah and sandy utah family photographer

    Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Recently I was able to visit a family in their home to photograph their young little girl as well as get some shots of the three of them together. I had met this little girl a couple of years ago at the preschool that I take school pictures for. I remember her that first year. Quiet and shy. Not wanting to look at me, not wanting to be separated from her sweet teacher. I remember taking my time with her, trying desperately to get at least one shot with her looking. No need for smiles, sometimes the perfect shot is a quiet and calm and wise gaze. We did get some images that day, and I was pleased. I returned a few months later to the school for another round of school pictures and I’m always pleased and amazed at how the kids grow and change. I was so happy to see this sweet girl again. So impressed when she walked right up to my setup and sat and smiled for me. It’s amazing to see the growth in small children, how the quiet ones open up and begin to trust and share of themselves.

I was so excited when I got the email that this little girl’s mom had scheduled a session with me. When I arrived at their house that little shy girl that I remember so clearly was gone and in her place was this vibrant girl ready to show me all around and smile and pose for me. We started out our session in her playroom where she put on a tea party for her mom and dad.

Later we went downstairs to read some books and she told me the story of The Patch. I loved peeking in as mom and dad both took turns reading to her.

After reading and enjoying some time indoors we headed out into the unseasonably warm January weather. Played some peek a boo and ran around in what was left of the snow.

After some scooter and bike riding we settled on the front steps for some fun and snuggly shots.

I just loved this shot of the three of them together. I enlisted the help of Miss M to get her parents to smile as I took some photos of just the two of them and she was all too happy to run up and give them both a big bear hug after we had finished.

Enjoy your little peek, there are many more to come C Family! :)

beautiful afternoon light for a family of six | salt lake city utah family photographer

    Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

I’ve photographed this littlest one at a local preschool for a couple of years and was so excited when her mother called to book a family session. This sweet girl has the most beautiful big brown eyes and I’ve always loved taking her school photos and usually have such a hard time narrowing her selection down. The afternoon was chilly but the skies were clear and blue and the light was gorgeous. We were able to get some great shots of each of the kids and several family images as well as some fun playing in the leaves shots.

Recently I had the pleasure of photographing an extended family of a bride and groom that I photographed just over a year ago. I worried about the weather all day…living here in Utah (as compared to growing up in Washington) I’ve always loved that sun is pretty much a standard in the summer. Well, that isn’t the case this summer and we battled dark skies and rain on and off all day. When it came time for our session that evening, the skies were overcast (perfect) and the rain let up…until I drove away after the session and noticed a few random raindrops. Here are a few of my favorites from this session of this University of Maryland football loving family (dad is one of the football coaches at the UoM).

what to wear wednesday | salt lake city utah family photographer | springtime photos

    Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Although I adore the snow…I mean really, really love it…I’m looking forward to springtime here in Utah. I’m looking forward to cherry blossoms and green grass, tulips and new leaves…and photo sessions that can take place outdoors. This week’s installment of what to wear wednesday showcases a family grouping, but remember, these ideas can easily be adapted for just the kids or for an engagement shoot or even a senior shoot. Think about your clothing choices as they relate to your current home decor and colors, think about the personality of the people being photographed…and remember, you can always bring several clothing options to your shoot!

I was so excited to catch up with this sweet family at one of our past session spots for a little family session in the snow. It was so fun to see them all again, we first met when the were patiently waiting for little C’s arrival and we have seen each other every few months for a little catch up session. It’s such a wonderful thing to see my clients grow and watch their little ones grow and mature. Thank you, B family, for choosing me to photograph your sweet family!

bloom forum’s fab 15 weekly challenge | salt lake city utah photographer | old | week 9

    Sunday, March 13th, 2011

This week’s challenge from the bloom forum’s fab 15 was old…

photograph of old wrist watch in salt lake city

This watch was my grandmother’s watch….my mom’s mom. When I was young, my grandma lived with the two of us for a while and she slept in my room while I slept in my mom’s room with her. But I remember my grandma’s nighttime routine. I remember listening to her wind her watch before bed, I remember watching her clean her face and get herself all situated and ready for bed. My cousin’s daughter found this watch along with another of our grandmother’s watches and gave this one to my daughter and kept the other…I have since taken over care of the watch. I must admit that it doesn’t keep great time (not sure if I’m winding it correctly or not) but even if it makes me late, I still love seeing this on my wrist. I’ll give it back to Claire when she’s a bit older and can ensure that it is looked after…but for now, this watch of my grandma’s will be on my wrist.

For more of the {fab 15’s} take on this week’s theme of old, go check out Katy Houston Photographer Christina Anglum. Thanks for taking a peek and I’ll be back with another prompt next Sunday!

salt lake city utah family photographer | what to wear wednesday | spring fashions

    Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Welcome back to the what to wear wednesday posts with a little look into Spring. As much as I adore the snow here in Utah, once that sun starts shining and the snow starts melting I begin to get really excited for all of the new beginnings that Spring offers. I love the selection of outfits below and they can all be easily adapted for the people in your shoot. Notice how the colors all blend nicely together, yet are not to matching. Also remember when selecting outfits for your family to take into consideration all the children together, each child alone with each parent, the parents together and all family members together as well.

salt lake city utah photographer weekly challenge definition

This week our creative prompt was shadow/shadows. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with this…I had visions of getting my three kids together, holding hands and getting a great shadow shot of them, but it’s been late nights every night this week so no sun=no shadows. But this morning I had the idea of making a heart with the hands of one of my three with the light that comes in through the family room sliding doors. That was a challenge in itself…

This week, be sure to take a peek at Albuquerque photographer Laura Meeks and her partners Arroyo Grande, CA photographer Janet Powers and Newton NJ photographer Tina for their takes on the paper challenge. And as always, don’t forget to check out my weekly partner for this year long project Kristyn LaPres, a fantastic Grand Rapids wedding and newborn photographer.

This past holiday season I had the pleasure to photograph this family and their children and grandchildren. We braved the cold and luckily had no rain or snow and found some fun locations at Gardner Village for their family portraits.
