salt lake city utah photographer weekly challenge definition

This week our creative prompt was shadow/shadows. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with this…I had visions of getting my three kids together, holding hands and getting a great shadow shot of them, but it’s been late nights every night this week so no sun=no shadows. But this morning I had the idea of making a heart with the hands of one of my three with the light that comes in through the family room sliding doors. That was a challenge in itself…

This week, be sure to take a peek at Albuquerque photographer Laura Meeks and her partners Arroyo Grande, CA photographer Janet Powers and Newton NJ photographer Tina for their takes on the paper challenge. And as always, don’t forget to check out my weekly partner for this year long project Kristyn LaPres, a fantastic Grand Rapids wedding and newborn photographer.

what to wear wednesday | fall inspired | salt lake city utah family photographer

    Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

The cooler weather is officially upon us, the leaves are turning and it’s chilly enough to make sweaters mandatory…especially in the evenings. If you’re struggling with ideas for your session with Carrie Owens Photography, check out the what to wear category here on the blog or take a look at this fantastic new resource Wardrobe Wednesday. And for clients of Carrie Owens Photography, there is a digital what to wear guide that can be found in the client section of the blog.

The newsletter came out last night…were you on the mailing list? If not, be sure to sign up here because a supplemental newsletter with mini session information will be going out soon…and those that are on the mailing list get first choice of time slots.

Have a great Wednesday everyone…it’s short day here in Utah for the kids as it’s UEA weekend, which means no school til next Tuesday!

what to wear for families for fall | salt lake city utah family photographer

    Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Today is a great fall day here in Utah…a little rain, some overcast skies a little chill in the air, I love it. Fall is my favorite season for so many reasons…football, school starting, leaves changing colors, Halloween and Thanksgiving, warm sweaters and socks. I don’t think I’m quite used to fall here in Utah even after 9 years of it…it’s still strange to me that the kids are going to school in shorts and tshirts all the way through September and into October even. I forget each year that if you’re not careful, you might miss the fall colors…seems like they were around longer in Washington. I do remember the years here where we’d get snow on Halloween and not see the grass again til spring…and as much as I LOVE snow, I think I’ll pass on that :)

Have you scheduled your fall session yet? There are lots of great locations where we can go and get that perfect shot of your family or kids that you’ve been hoping for. Holiday cards on your list? We can get that checked off too. Once you’ve got that session scheduled, are you trying to come up with ideas on how to style your session from a clothing standpoint? Just not sure what you all should wear? Wondering if you should all match or just coordinate? Wondering if you should get dressed up or stay casual? The biggest thing I tell my clients to remember is to wear something that is comfortable – especially for kids. Nothing gets a cute happy kid grouchier faster than an outfit that they’re pulling at or that mom or dad has to keep adjusting. Wear something that reflects you as a family and as a person…these images should be treasured for years if not generations to come, you want them to be a true representation of who you were at this point in your life.

Feel free to browse through my What to Wear Wednesday category for more ideas.

This past week I took my own three out for a little photo shoot before the fall gets too busy. We went to one of my very favorite spots and got lots of great images. I’m just sharing a few here, but I’m pretty sure we got the photo for the Christmas card done as well as some other goodies. Check that off my list :)

family favorite | Salt Lake City family photographer in Seattle

    Monday, September 27th, 2010

This summer I had the pleasure of photographing this adorable family while in Seattle at the Japanese Tea Gardens in the Arboretum…shooting there was just about enough to make me want to pack up my house and move back, but I was able to resist :) It’s a beautiful location if you’re ever in Seattle, you should definitely take the time for a visit anytime of year. After the sneak peek of the two kids, I wanted to share this shot of them as a family and take the time to remind those of you that are still wanting your family shots, this is the time to get them done! The weather is getting cooler, the days are getting shorter (less light…) and spots are filling up. Now is the time :)

We got some great family shots as well as these individual shots that I wanted to share here. Thanks for looking and enjoy your weekend!

on a mission… | salt lake city family photographer

    Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

I was asked to take some family photographs of this beautiful family as they appeared just days before their second oldest son left on his mission. It was great to visit them in their home and take advantage of their beautiful front yard. We had intended to make sure we got some family shot…which I will post some of those in another post…but also focused on some individual shots as well.
