It’s Friday again and here is the sixth installment of my 4 the love of focus project 52 myworldyourworld group. We have been posting every week our two images side by side in a diptych as shown below. It has been great to see everyone’s take on the themes each week and to see how differently each person views a topic. If you have time, be sure to check out the 4 the love of focus blog to see the other images that have been posted as well as some great member spotlights and other fun tips and insights for photographers.

This week our creative prompt was shadow/shadows. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with this…I had visions of getting my three kids together, holding hands and getting a great shadow shot of them, but it’s been late nights every night this week so no sun=no shadows. But this morning I had the idea of making a heart with the hands of one of my three with the light that comes in through the family room sliding doors. That was a challenge in itself…

This week, be sure to take a peek at Albuquerque photographer Laura Meeks and her partners Arroyo Grande, CA photographer Janet Powers and Newton NJ photographer Tina for their takes on the paper challenge. And as always, don’t forget to check out my weekly partner for this year long project Kristyn LaPres, a fantastic Grand Rapids wedding and newborn photographer.

In thinking about new years resolutions and things that I want to improve upon for 2011 I decided to go the route of Ali Edwards and her one little word. Ali has been a friend of mine since my days of scrapbooking and someone that I have always admired for her talent and her kindness. This one little word is something that Ali has done for a couple of years and something that I have followed and watched from afar…I’ve come up with my own words before, but this year I wanted to really find a word that I could hang on to. I thought about the areas in my life that need improvement and what I could do to follow through with my intentions. I know that something I often struggle with is completion. Following through with a project and seeing it until it’s finished. I thought about the word completion, the word finish and the words follow through but none of them seemed to quite fit the direction I wanted to go…and then one afternoon when I was telling my kids to focus it hit me…I could use a little focus in my own life.
I am a busy mom of three and a wife and a business owner and someone who wants to have a beautiful and clean home without piles of laundry and a person who wants to be fit and healthy…and that gets me tired just thinking about all that I want to do and be. So I get overwhelmed sometimes and lose my focus. I forget sometimes where I want to be in life and the person that I want to be. And then I slow down a little and regain my focus and my happiness. I find that I am most happy when I complete a task…when I work towards completing a task or a goal and feel the satisfaction of that accomplishment. So this year I’m going to be better about focusing. When I’m involved in something, be it a task or an assignment or laundry or simply a conversation…it gets my focus. All of it.

The necklace I wear is from Lisa Leonard and is actually two necklaces, her through my lens necklace and her word of the year necklace and they both remind me of where I want to be…focused on creating the best life for me and for my loved ones that I can.

weektwo

This week we were given the prompt “guilt”…I thought that was pretty funny coming off of a week of “resolution” and so my image was pretty easy for me. I am still doing great with my fitness routines and really enjoying getting stronger and more athletic, but I still have one vice that I can’t seem to shake and that is my soda…diet coke? Nope…that’s regular Cherry Pepsi and it’s just not good for me. And so I’m quitting, slowly. I would probably do a lot better if I would just go cold turkey, but that has been hard this week. But that is my goal…no more soda, no more guilt about drinking it.

My partner for this year long project is the very talented Kristyn of Kristyn LaPresPhotography (portrait and lifestyle photographer in West Michigan) so please take a look at our images below and be sure to check out her blog as well! And if you get a moment, please check out Veronica Starr and see what she and her partner posted about!

it’s Halloween cookie time around here…My mom sends us cookies to decorate for just about every holiday and the kids always look so forward to making their creations.

I did have some icing…but no cookies. Saving myself for the boatloads of candy these three are going to bring in this weekend…

This past weekend I had the great opportunity to photograph this family…the parents, the three kids, daughter in law and the sweet grandson. We explored a beautiful canyon and found some excellent spots with some gorgeous fall color…enjoy!

The cooler weather is officially upon us, the leaves are turning and it’s chilly enough to make sweaters mandatory…especially in the evenings. If you’re struggling with ideas for your session with Carrie Owens Photography, check out the what to wear category here on the blog or take a look at this fantastic new resource Wardrobe Wednesday. And for clients of Carrie Owens Photography, there is a digital what to wear guide that can be found in the client section of the blog.
The newsletter came out last night…were you on the mailing list? If not, be sure to sign up here because a supplemental newsletter with mini session information will be going out soon…and those that are on the mailing list get first choice of time slots.
Have a great Wednesday everyone…it’s short day here in Utah for the kids as it’s UEA weekend, which means no school til next Tuesday!

Today is a great fall day here in Utah…a little rain, some overcast skies a little chill in the air, I love it. Fall is my favorite season for so many reasons…football, school starting, leaves changing colors, Halloween and Thanksgiving, warm sweaters and socks. I don’t think I’m quite used to fall here in Utah even after 9 years of it…it’s still strange to me that the kids are going to school in shorts and tshirts all the way through September and into October even. I forget each year that if you’re not careful, you might miss the fall colors…seems like they were around longer in Washington. I do remember the years here where we’d get snow on Halloween and not see the grass again til spring…and as much as I LOVE snow, I think I’ll pass on that
Have you scheduled your fall session yet? There are lots of great locations where we can go and get that perfect shot of your family or kids that you’ve been hoping for. Holiday cards on your list? We can get that checked off too. Once you’ve got that session scheduled, are you trying to come up with ideas on how to style your session from a clothing standpoint? Just not sure what you all should wear? Wondering if you should all match or just coordinate? Wondering if you should get dressed up or stay casual? The biggest thing I tell my clients to remember is to wear something that is comfortable – especially for kids. Nothing gets a cute happy kid grouchier faster than an outfit that they’re pulling at or that mom or dad has to keep adjusting. Wear something that reflects you as a family and as a person…these images should be treasured for years if not generations to come, you want them to be a true representation of who you were at this point in your life.
Feel free to browse through my What to Wear Wednesday category for more ideas.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to photograph the sweet family of four at one of my very favorite spots. I was so thrilled when they showed up with lots of outfit options and fun ideas. I love it when that happens! There are so many great shots from this session, but I’m just showing a few now.
Thanks for making the trip guys, I hope you had a great time!

This past week I took my own three out for a little photo shoot before the fall gets too busy. We went to one of my very favorite spots and got lots of great images. I’m just sharing a few here, but I’m pretty sure we got the photo for the Christmas card done as well as some other goodies. Check that off my list
