entended family in the chilly air | salt lake city utah family photographer

This time of year brings extended family into town and this is a great time to schedule that session with your grown siblings and their families. This particular family is one that I’ve photographed before…I photographed their little one just seven days after he was born and then again when he was a few months old and then their sweet family of four last fall. This fall it was great to meet all of dad’s extended family (although I had met some of them at our newborn session) and get some great shots of them all together and some individual family shots as well. It was so chilly this day and when people were outside the shot they were all huddled together trying to get warm and cozy…this session reminded me that it’s time for me to invest in some cute knitted fingerless gloves for shooting chilly sessions outside in this Utah weather.

dancing queen(s) | sandy utah child and family photographer

I was able to photograph two of my favorite little girls this season and wanted to blog part of their session in this post. I’ve known these girls for almost three years when I met them and their mom while photographing them at their daycare. I’ve so loved watching them grow into their own personalities and cannot wait to see them as the mature into young women. As part of our recent session, the girl’s mom wanted to capture them as they often are dancing and running in the front room. So she got them dressed in their dance clothes and pushed the couch back as they usually do and let them go. We got many other images, some of which I will blog later next week, but I wanted to share this series as I just love how much it shows the girls being themselves. One of my favorite things about holding a session at a client’s home is the ability to let the kids just be kids and hopefully capture some of their routines or parts of their lives that the parents don’t want to forget. Kids grow so fast, take time to capture these little daily childhood moments while you can.

it’s that time of year | sandy utah family photographer

This November to December transition seems like it’s been crazier than normal around the Owens household, but Markus wasn’t going to miss bringing those kids breakfast to start off the month right. The kids were so excited to wake up from a sleepover in the basement with Grammy and head upstairs to see Markus on the table complete with donuts all around. He was perched in the bowl of ornaments with a little “happy December” flag and had made chocolate milk for the milk bottles with cute little straws complete with washi tape flags…three kids with serious bed head enjoying a little sweet breakfast before heading out to the girlie’s first basketball game of the season.

fun family of four | salt lake city utah family and child photographer

I met this family of four up a local canyon for a quick session in the chilly mountain air. I knew these two littles from my time photographing them at their daycare over the past couple of years, but it was so great to meet mom and dad and get some great images of the family together. Little Miss was so excited to get her parents smiling and laughing and was full of great poses and giggles. Her little brother was sweet and quiet and proud to tell me that he’s three (complete with two fingers and a thumb up to show me). While walking around we spotted a little lady bug and little miss A was quick to pick him up and show the little critter to her little brother…reminded me of my own daughter who is so intrigued by bugs of all kinds. I had such a great time with these four and although mom has seen the images, I wanted to share some of my favorite images here, enjoy.

little baby boy in the studio | salt lake city utah newborn photographer

This little one was just so cute. He and his mom and dad came to my studio when he was just over a week old and we had a great time posing him and even got some great eyes wide open shots (the first shot below may be one of my new favorite shots ever). One thing to remember with newborn shoots is that even with lots of planning, babies are on their own schedule and sometimes we schedule a shoot when they aren’t really wanting to do what we have in mind…and that’s ok. We still will get lots of great images and sometimes will be surprised with a shot we weren’t expecting. Sometimes they sleep, sometimes they get the hiccups, sometimes they are wide awake and sometimes they cry…and usually they will make a mess on at least one blanket. And that’s why they’re so cute. Because we forget about all of that when we see those sweet little faces and fingers and toes…
