While in Washington the kids and I went to visit my dad in Des Moines and then headed out to the Seattle Center with his wife and her son and his daughter for some fun times. It has been forever since I’ve been to the Seattle Center…probably since New Year’s Eve 98…and a lot has changed, but so much was still the same. It was so much fun to go there with my dad as he and I spent many a Saturday there while he tried to listen to the music and I wanted to ride the rides. I remember riding a roller coaster with him there and knocking out a tooth…I remember putt putt golf with him there and so many trips to the Science Center and many other great memories.

Although the EMP was built after I spent so much time at the Seattle Center as a kid (it was there when I was older, but I never have visited), it’s still pretty awesome to look at. Maybe someday I’ll get to go inside

We walked through the Center and saw some old sights and then headed towards the fountain. The kids all had a great time and got very wet, but there were lots of smiles to go around!

After we got the kids to dry off, we let them go on a few rides and of course Mr Smily just loved them…

While on our trip to Washington this summer, my mom and the kids and I did a lot of visiting of places that held memories from my childhood. I was also lucky enough to meet up with my best friend from when I was 5 while she was on her visit from Finland. It’s been so long since we’ve seen each other and now we both have our own kids. We decided to meet at Madison Park where we used to spend so much time together as kids.

I love this image of Claire…this is the park that I used to go to with my friend so often as a little girl as well as my dad on our Wednesday and Saturday visits…I promise those stone animals were much bigger when I was little…

After the park, we headed over for some lunch at a restaurant we’d all been to before although it was under a new name…and then a quick swimsuit change and a trip down to the beach. So fun to have our kids swim and play at the very same beach we played together as kids.

And no trip to Madison Park is complete without a trip to the Bakery…I didn’t get a maple bar, which is what I remember getting when we were little, but it was so cool to sit there with my best friend, her kids, my kids and both our moms as if we all just lived up the street again. Getting old and growing up is tough…keeping in touch with old friends is hard, and I miss her all the time. Finland is a long way from Utah…and Utah is a long way from Finland. But it’s amazing to see how we just slip back into close friends the second we see each other…

In an effort to get caught up, I’m blogging again. This time just a couple random images from the house yesterday, nothing special except to me I’ve kind of let my 365 lapse and might start posting more of those random images here… I love that we have three kids that get along so very well…Miss Claire is missing from this afternoon of fun, but she’s usually right there in the middle of it.

It’s been a busy and crazy summer…especially those last couple weeks. And now that school has started, I’m starting to get back on track with things. The kids are loving school, each have great teachers and even little Max is loving being at school all day long. They’re back in fall sports, soccer and swimming and flag football to start soon which keeps us all busy as usual and this weekend starts college football and other great fall things…my very favorite time of year!

I have lots of photos to catch up with and wanted to share a few from our stay at my mom’s house in Tacoma…it was fun visiting home, but it just reaffirms that home is really Utah now, which is a great thing.

today was Max’s first day of first grade…they start a day later than all the other kids at the school (aside from the kindergarteners) so we’ve had 2 first days of school here at the Owens house. They all had a great day Max is still smiling from ear to ear.

It’s been a while, I know…it’s been a busy end of the summer and we still have one busy week left before my life can get back to “normal” and I can get back to posting. I have a lot of fun things planned this fall and winter as well as a lot of catching up to do on posting from some of our summer travels. Even though it’s incredibly hot and sticky out here in Utah, Target has started pushing their back to school stuff (which does make me happy)…which will soon lead to Halloween (the *very* best time of year!) and Thanksgiving and Christmas. And if you’re like me, once July is over the rest of the year just melts into one giant month of Augu-cember and it can be scary that those once grand ideas of getting all these things done before the holidays turns into your New Years Resolutions for 2011. I know, I’ve been there So this year…let’s plan ahead

ahh, cherries | salt lake city family photographer

Looking out the window watching the three kids play with their dad in the backyard as I washed the cherries we had just finished picking from the tree I started to wonder…when they are grown, will this be a memory? Will this be something they remember? Will they think back on the summers of their childhood and think about the evenings where we picked cherries from the tree and played in the yard as a family? Will they believe it was something they did every day? every week? or just every so often? As I stood there watching them, I decided it didn’t matter…as long as they remembered.

So please excuse the technically not perfect shot of the view I had while watching my family play…and yes, all three kids were out there…I just couldn’t get a shot with all of them without exposing the complete disaster of my kitchen

and here is the bowl (one of many) of cherries…I thought they looked so cool, each one a perfect little red heart…I don’t really like cherries though. Any ideas on what to do with them all????

grand cayman | more cruise photos | salt lake city photographer

One of our stops on our Carnival Cruise was to Grand Cayman. For this stop the family decided not to take an excursion from the boat and just find what we could find off the ship. Once we took our tender from the ship to the shore, there were lots of people begging for the passengers attention. We found a tour that would take us to the stingrays and for a little snorkeling, so 13 of the 15 of us decided to take a chance…

The skies were a bit stormy while in Grand Cayman and we even got a little rain, which felt amazing with the heat and the humidity. I couldn’t get over the color of the water…for our tour we took a quick drive to where the tour guides had their boat and then boarded the boat for a drive out to the stingrays. I am now wishing that I would have done a little reading about the stingrays so that I would have been a little more prepared for our visit…and maybe a little less frightened.

I was shocked that this “Stingray City” idea was simply a ton of boats each with a ton of people on some sandbar out in the middle of the water with a ton of stingrays. I was completely expecting something more…civilized. So before we’re getting off the boat, the guides are telling us to make sure we shuffle our *bare* feet along the sand and I’m sure she mentioned that it was so that we wouldn’t step on them or disturb them, perhaps so we keep them happy in their own water…so we get in the chest high crystal clear water and of course my children are not completely listening and are jumping around in the water and the other people are swimming and going after these stingrays, which is NOT what she told us to do. And Miss Rule Follower Carrie is shuffling her bare feet along this white sandbar and seeing these giant stingrays all around and slowly starting to freak out.

Do you see how large some of them were? I will not share the photos that my brother in law took as they show a very freaked out Carrie (although they are quite humorous)…but if you’re my mom, you’ll see them someday So we’re in this water, the kids are having fun, Jarrod is having fun, my niece and nephew are having a great time chasing after these animals, my sister in law is trying to feed them…everyone who was on the boat and got in the water fails to see the creepiness of this adventure and are swimming around in bliss thinking this is all ok and a completely normal activity. And then one of their tails went across the back of my leg and it was all over. Jarrod said the look on my face told him everything and that he can’t remember a time that I looked so freaked out. He told me to get out of the water if I was so scared…I was already halfway back to the boat, to heck with all you people in the water, I was getting out of there. So now, looking back, I wish I would have somehow prepared myself so that I could have voluntarily touched one like my daughter did…or held one like my husband and oldest son each did. But instead I hung out for half the time in the boat with my smartest child Max as we watched these crazy people play with giant stingrays.

After the stingrays we drove the boat to a different location for a little snorkeling and that was a lot of fun…tough with the little kids hanging on mom and dad, but something I would love to do again. The boat returned us to shore, the buses took us back to the port for the tenders to return us to the ship after we took in a little shopping. Overall, the trip was a huge success and the kids still find it extremely hilarious that their mother kind of lost it. Good times for all.

I was asked to take some family photographs of this beautiful family as they appeared just days before their second oldest son left on his mission. It was great to visit them in their home and take advantage of their beautiful front yard. We had intended to make sure we got some family shot…which I will post some of those in another post…but also focused on some individual shots as well.

cruise photos | family fun

I wanted to share some images from our recent cruise…be prepared, this is a long and lengthy post with lots of images to keep the family happy

I loved the lines of the ship and had a shot in mind, but with the camera and lens I brought, it wasn’t happening…the above shot ended up doing the job.

The port of Miami was full of so many boats and the weather was beautiful.

I love how little Maxie is trying to see over the edge…the wind was fierce as we looked over the edge after leaving the Port of Miami.

As we were wandering around the ship that first afternoon, the video guy stopped us and asked if one of our kids wanted one of the airbrush tattoos for free in exchange for being on tv…of course Jack was thrilled with the idea and got a blue-green scorpion.

The colors in Jamaica were beautiful, the deep greens, the amazing colors of the water…the bright white buildings tucked into the hillside…loved it there.

There were many booths set up by the locals for shopping, however we took a trip to Dunn’s River Falls to hike up the falls. We couldn’t bring our cameras along for the hike, so I didn’t get any images of the long chain of people hiking up the falls…including Claire who braved the trip after a nasty fall in a waterfall last summer resulting in several stitches in her knee (twice). We were so proud of her! And all of us…it was a pretty steep climb in some spots, but our guide took great care of us and got us to the top.

After the falls we headed to a beach to swim and eat and play in the ocean…

And tomorrow I will hopefully post images from Grand Cayman and the rest of the trip…
