I was so happy to cuddle this little guy and see his sweet smile and get some great shots for his parents. My sister in law brought along this fabulous grey and blue knit blanket and I just love these images of him dozing off and smiling his little sleepy baby smile.

This shot below is one of my favorite images to get when mom and dad are willing to get into the photos…and even if you’re not feeling up to being in front of the camera, this is a great image to capture. It won’t be long before this little one is too grown up to fit in mom and dad’s hands. I also love his little swirl of hair that you can see here.

This image below I just love. I love seeing baby looking up at his dad, forehead all wrinkled and sweet…and in case you can’t tell, dad’s pretty happy looking down at his new son.

Baby was getting sleepy and I was able to catch this yawn before he slipped into dreamland…

Just look at those sweet little hands tucked up under his chin…

Dad and mom are big superhero fans…and I’m sure baby will be as well. Mom brought along this great big pillow that one of her sister’s made for baby and we were sure to get some shots with the little one under the protection of Batman.

Mom’s other sister knit this fabulous Santa hat and stocking and we got him all nestled in and cozy so we could get a few images in the festive hat. Merry Christmas from this new little Owens baby…

We knew he would be arriving in December and it was pretty likely that he would join us early. My husband was out of town and the kids and I were at swim practice (of course) when I got the call from my mother in law that my sister in law was going into Labor and Delivery for a status check. After we arrived home we got the text from my brother in law that the baby was in fact coming that evening. The kids and I got in the car and headed down to pick up my father in law and head to the hospital to join the rest of the family. We arrived at the waiting room not long after the soon to be parents headed into the OR for the surgery. We all sat in the waiting room…and waited. And waited. This was the first time since my cousin had her baby years ago that I’d been on this side of things. The kids were getting restless, but soon enough my brother in law let us know that it was time to come see the newest member of the family. The grandparents all headed down first and then we were motioned that we could head back. It was so great seeing my sister in law with her new baby boy in her arms. She and my brother in law had waited so long for this day and I was so happy for them that it was finally here. I’ve already taken the newborn photos and I’ll be posting those tomorrow, but tonight I wanted to share my view of that evening while we waited for the newest Owens to be born.

He and his mom and dad came to my studio when he was just over a week old and we had a great time posing him and even got some great eyes wide open shots (the first shot below may be one of my new favorite shots ever). One thing to remember with newborn shoots is that even with lots of planning, babies are on their own schedule and sometimes we schedule a shoot when they aren’t really wanting to do what we have in mind…and that’s ok. We still will get lots of great images and sometimes will be surprised with a shot we weren’t expecting. Sometimes they sleep, sometimes they get the hiccups, sometimes they are wide awake and sometimes they cry…and usually they will make a mess on at least one blanket. And that’s why they’re so cute. Because we forget about all of that when we see those sweet little faces and fingers and toes…

He came with his mom and dad and they brought his grandma along, too for his first little photo shoot. Watching new parents with their little ones is so fun for me. I love seeing how much they love their new bundles of joy. We had a great time, watching him sleep…listening to his little cries. I say that with a smile, as this little one barely had a cry to give. He slept wonderfully, let us pose him and move him around in all they ways we needed for the images we were hoping for. And in the end, we got so many great shots of him alone as well as some great shots with him and his mom as they rocked and fed in my rocking chair. We even got some fun ones with mom and dad and a few with the proud papa and his new son all alone. I wanted to share just a few of my favorites, although there were so many to choose from, I had some trouble narrowing it down to just these!

Mom couldn’t get enough of his sweet little wrinkled feet, so I had to start off with this image highlighting his perfect feet and tiny little toes:

When I arrived she was full and the house was warm and cozy…very warm, just as requested. We got settled in and began moving baby around and she was just the most perfect little sleeper. Mom and dad were so happy to be new parents. I loved seeing how much they adored their new little girl. She was perfectly tiny and had the the sweetest little baby lips.  I got so many great shots but I wanted to share a few here, enjoy this little cutie.

When I arrived she was sleeping soundly in her swing, but once we moved her, she wasn’t wanting to close her eyes and miss a thing. She finally snoozed a bit and we were able to get some sweet shots, both indoors and out (the beauty of hot Utah Septembers!). I loved her little silver bracelet, so delicate and sweet.  Here are a few of my favorites from the session…

I love this couple and had such a great time photographing their wedding and I remember telling them that I couldn’t wait until they decided to have babies as I knew that they would make some beautiful children. I wasn’t wrong :) I was so happy when I found out that they were expecting and had a great time shooting their maternity photos in my studio. When baby K arrived I was so happy for them and couldn’t wait to have him in my studio. We got many great shots, but the photo below just might be one of my favorites. Babies grow and change but you can usually still see their faces in those baby photos as they grow…but they are only this little for such a very short time. Those tiny feet and little legs will grow and run and play and have many fun adventures but they are only able to be cradled close like this for so long.

This is the adorable guy that was showing me how strong he was when he first got here…he was so tempted not to sleep, didn’t want to miss a thing. I just love the little wrinkles in his forehead and those gorgeous blue eyes.

It was late, the kids were already asleep, I had some DVR’d shows (American Idol) that I needed and really wanted to watch…but I didn’t want to stop doing what I was doing to go into the other room to relax. I was thinking about the shoots that I have planned for next week – including a 2 day shoot at a school that I am so very excited about, and the shoots that I have in my mind that I want to do and I realized that I was just so excited about them.

I know that I am very lucky to have the opportunity that I do to live out my dreams and be a photographer. I know that I’m lucky that I have my three kids who are willing (most of the time) to model for me, test out locations for shoots and try out some of the ideas I have floating around in my head. I know that I’m lucky that I have a super supportive husband who encourages me and pushes me to be the best me that I can be. I’m lucky for the amazing clients that I’ve met and been able to get glimpses into their lives.
